About the Economic Development Corporation
Mission: Who we are: Started in 1958 by a group of local business people, MVDC has a long history in our community. The non-profit corporation has worked with the City, local citizens, and businesses on several development related activities, most notably: 1962 north parking lot, 1978 south parking lot, 1991 Community Economic Preparedness Program (CEPP) from the Iowa Department of Economic Development, 1995 major community survey on assisted living facility, 1998 historic preservation efforts/Pizza Palace building, 1999 consistent review of available commercial/retail space, 2000 fund raising campaign (joint effort with the Mount Vernon Area Chamber of Commerce) to hire an executive director.
Today the organization is focused upon keeping up with the fast pace of business as usual. Preparing Mount Vernon and area businesses for increases in population and requests for services is just one of the planning dimensions of the MVDC. Maintaining the integrity of our hometown lifestyle is another dimension of our approach.
In Mount Vernon, new home construction ensures an expansion of our current population base of 3,800 by nearly 1,050 people in fewer than five years. That estimated figure is over a 25% jump in population!
As the MVDC, we seek to provide
leadership in the planning of our community’s future and we work to get
the necessary tasks accomplished. The MVDC is proud of our area’s
businesses, community and city leadership, who work together to plan and
implement tough projects on behalf of our citizens. |
